Art Director

Hillhouse Creative is looking for a creative individual who wants to take their career to the next level, assist in streamlining processes, develop company culture, and support new business growth. The Art Director is responsible for establishing conceptual and stylistic direction for the creative work. We are looking for an experienced manager, who can inspire—and be inspired by others—and take our creative efforts to the next level. The candidate’s primary role is to lead conceptual development, production, and oversee multiple creative projects, while simultaneously being a hands-on contributor within the agency. The ideal art director will bring a mix of artistic, marketing, and business expertise to the position. This is a client facing role.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create smart, compelling creative solutions across a wide array of media including print, interactive/multimedia, and motion graphics
  • Report to creative director and assist creative team in all aspects of execution of projects
  • Work closely with other creative team members, including other designers, developers, and writers
  • Provide guidance and mentoring for other members of the creative team
  • Move comfortably among multiple projects with various audiences
  • Participate in and sometimes lead collaborative ideation/brainstorming sessions
  • Work within identified budgets, meet all deadlines
  • Work closely with outside agency collaborators and vendors
  • Work with the creative director to establish standards for production, productivity, quality, and client service
  • Ensure team adheres to current processes, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement, and proposing and creating processes and tools to support design operations
  • Stay current on all industry trends
  • Perform other duties as needed

  • Strong conceptual, problem-solving and executional skills
  • Strong creative vision with an understanding of business objectives
  • Ability to understand and identify key strategic issues, and develop creative solutions
  • Advanced knowledge of strategy and design development of printed and digital pieces
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interpret creative direction to team and clients
  • Comfortable leading client presentations
  • Must be organized and very detail oriented
  • Works efficiently, proactively, accurately and independently
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products
  • Experience in managing and inspiring junior staff; foster teamwork and idea exchange
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience in management role
  • Exceptional capability with typography and layout
  • Highly skilled with leading a team of creative talent


  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or a related discipline
  • 5+ years experience in advertising agency/design studio/branding firm
  • Advanced experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Prior management experience
  • Established portfolio that showcases strategic and creative thinking
  • Familiarity with Basecamp, or similar project management system, and time tracking systems a plus

Valued but not Required Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of photography and video production
  • Digital experience—from website development to online marketing
