Founded in Norton, VA, in 1982, Family Crisis Support Services offers services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and those experiencing homelessness. Over the years, their services have expanded and grown to meet the needs of the people in their communities. They manage a six-acre campus, five emergency shelters, two transitional permanent supportive housing shelters for women, one permanent supportive housing shelter for men, and two facilities dedicated to distributing basic-need items to individuals. They also operate a 24-hour hotline and offer around-the-clock support with a chat feature on their website.
Family Crisis Support Services came to us when they were in the process of opening a new center in Norton, VA. They realized that they needed a refreshed logo to convey their mission of helping any resident of Southwest Virginia who has experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, or homelessness. As they grew and expanded their programs, they also identified the need for an updated website that would be user-friendly for both donors and clients. Their priorities were mobile and SEO optimization, while being mission-driven, story-focused, colorful, and modern.

Our Approach
The Logo
The client needed a simple logo that conveys hope, connection, and stability. The three gender-neutral figures are grounded on an orange arch and under a simple roof, which emphasizes their stability and the importance of stable housing for finding healing and hope after difficult circumstances. The colors chosen in the logo symbolize the work of FCCS. Purple is nationally recognized as the color of domestic violence. It represents courage, peace, and a dedication to ending the various ways that this form of violence manifests. Teal represents sexual assault awareness and support for survivors. Used together, these colors send a powerful message of hope and healing.
The Website
Designing a website for domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy groups presents a unique challenge: protecting the safety and privacy of clients while providing useful information for donors. Since the client requested a site with a focus on storytelling, we selected stock photography that expresses healing, connection, and supportive relationships. A sticky bar at the bottom of the website prominently showcases a “quick exit” button and information about hiding internet history to protect individuals in dangerous situations. The website is carefully organized to provide educational information, share the programs and services, and provide an easy way for donors to offer support.
The Results
A big jump in website traffic
After launching the new website, clicks and impressions increased significantly. In the three months prior to launch, the site received 612 clicks. In the three months following the launch, that number jumped to 2.62K. Impressions increased from 13.4K to 112K during the same period. We are thrilled that the new user-friendly design, improved SEO, and mission-driven content have led to much greater visibility for Family Crisis Support Services’ important work!
